Arabian Stars
Arabian Stars
Arabian Stars is a published project documenting artist Jordi Colomer’s video work in Yemen under the same name. In the video, local people walk toward the camera waving colored placards with names written on them in Arabic. The names are all names of real and fictional characters in the Western popular imagination. Here, the artist is playing on the lack of understanding: The Yemenis do not know these characters (Marilyn Monroe, Batman, Mickey Mouse, etc.), and the Western viewer does not recognize the names, as they are written in Arabic.
The cover is cardboard, just like the placards in the video, and the title covers the full width, making the viewer a participant in the piece. Inside, the photo captions are in a separate section, where they come across as a meaningless list. This is followed by images from the videos. The book finishes up with cropped images that document the placards from the project.
