A logo for America

Installation

by Alfredo Jaar

Alfredo Jaar is a Chilean visual artist based in New York, famous mainly for his installations in which he combines elements of photography, architecture and theater. In 1987, When he created the original billboard, the relationship between the US and Latin America was a bubbling political and cultural issue. Today, that issue has reached a boiling point – becoming a hot excuse for hatred and bigotry, fear and loathing – as extreme nationalism and xenophobia are injected into the nation’s bloodstream by Donald Trump. For Trump, this IS America – and he wants to build a wall to keep it that way.

The Sacrifice

Film
by Andréi Tarkovski

The Russian master belongs to that small lineage of filmmakers who generate almost more interest in art scholars than in moviegoers. Perhaps because of the pictorial value of his long frames, his way of telling emotions through contrasts between light and shadow, or the strong weight of certain traditions of Christian art in his images. “Sacrifice” (1986), his film testament, works as a magnificent example of this twinning between the worlds of cinema and art.

Far Out Recordings

Music Label

Far Out Recordings was founded in 1994 by London DJ and record producer Joe Davis. His longstanding and insatiable passion for Brazilian music, fuelled by his initial love of the jazz, funk and soul ubiquitous on the Rare Groove scene in 1980s London, took him to Brazil first as a teenager. It was there that his enthusiasm for record-collecting led him to some of his musical heroes and the eventual formation of musical bonds and close friendships. Joe’s early discoveries led to him becoming the UK’s foremost authority on Brazilian music, much of it little-known here before his enthusiastic endorsements began to ring out across the music scene. This led to the inevitable, and the keen young music fan and DJ with an entrepreneurial flair founded Far Out Recordings.
