Named Naala Badu, meaning ‘seeing waters’ in the Sydney Aboriginal language, the building opened to the public in December 2022. It marks the culmination of the decade-long Sydney Modern Project, which reimagined the 153-year-old institution as an expanded art museum campus seamlessly integrating art, architecture, and landscape.
SANAA in Sydney takes readers behind the scenes of this ambitious undertaking, offering insights into its design and engagement with art, people, and the environment. The book features the work of renowned architectural photographer Iwan Baan, whose three commissioned photo essays appear alongside texts by esteemed contributors including Art Gallery director Michael Brand; Harvard University architectural historian Eve Blau; University of Technology Sydney professor Anthony Burke; and Yuko Hasegawa, director of the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa.
