Lecturas para un espectador inquieto
Lecturas para un espectador inquieto
This publication, edited by the CA2M art center in Madrid, is an advanced guide to contemporary art. Originally from a series of lectures on the main themes and tendencies in art produced today, it features images from the center’s collection paired with a selection of international artworks. While highly academic and appealing to a crowd of knowledgeable artists, critics and curators, it still aims to teach amateurs the key concepts affecting contemporary art.
The book design is based around a basic shape: a vertical rectangle. This rectangle represents the field the book operates in (the block of text), but also the space of the artwork. The different openings in the book modulate this basic black rectangle to represent the various themes of the book. The format is a hybrid between a large art book with appropriate space to display the images and a smaller book that is easier to read. The body copy is a generous size, and a double bar device opens the text space for images or secondary text references when needed. Separate general texts and artist interviews are displayed on a special gray paper, and there are visual chapters with no words, which are printed on special coated paper.
